My Old School

General info:

"My Old School" is the sixth track of Steely Dan's second album Countdown To Ecstasy. It was the album's second single which peaked at #63 on the Billboard 100 charts. It is one of the band's most popular tracks, both in general and in a live atmosphere.

Live info:

"My Old School" was first performed throughout 1973. It was also performed live on the Midnight Special television series and mimed on an episode of American Bandstand that same year. It was also performed throughout 1974 with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on lead vocals.

Like other tracks, "My Old School" returned in 1993 when Steely Dan hit the stages for the first time in 19 years. It gained encore status alongside "FM (No Static At All)" and was performed at every show that tour. On the September 8th Greek Theatre show of that year, Walter Becker's then 7 year old son Kawai Becker sang backing vocals on the track. It has been performed on every tour as an encore since then, with shows where the track was skipped becoming a rare occurance. The only years where it was played less than usual were 2007 and 2008, where it was performed only 10 and 16 times respectively.
